Adelaide Royal Show Coverage: Presented by 'Trojan Equine' - 3rd Sep 2009

"Jetset, Sunset". Wendy Schaeffer flew in this morning from the Sydney Three Day Event to ride her sensational mare, 'Koyuna Sunset'. A busy schedule maybe, but it has not affected Wendy's performance. She jumped a double clear to take second place in the Adelaide World Cup Qualifier by less than a second.

Adelaide Royal Showjumping Round Up
24th September.

By Anna Sharpley

The Adelaide Qualifier was the most entertaining seen for some time and a great success as an entertaining class for the 3000 odd spectators, as well as an up to standard test for the awarding of half a Certificate of Capability for those to jump a first round clear. The fact that six jumped clear, providing a thrilling second round, was no indication that the track was soft. Australian Jumping Coach, Rod Brown was happy with the standard, declaring it a "good track". New Zealand Course Designer, Gerrit Becker declared it the biggest track he has built, and the course had the requisite 1.60m verticals, 1.50m x 2.00m triple bar, open water and some big oxers. The course was not overly technical, with the biggest decision to be made, whether to do six or seven strides from the triple bar at fence six to the vertical, one stride vertical, two strides, oxer combination set at 1.50m, 1.50m and 1.50m x 1.60m. The six strides were certainly there for the taking and some jumped it with varying degrees of success. However, seven strides proved a popular option and were executed brilliantly by Michelle Lang-McMahon and Animate. Michelle has only been riding the powerful Animo stallion for about four months and they look better and better every outing. They easily made up any time lost with the additional stride with and economical tour around the rest of the course. Michelle and Animate jumped a super double clear for third place and importantly half a COC. I would be game enough to say that Adelaide marked the beginning of their serious bid for 2010 WEG selection.

As expected the treble combination caused some trouble with five of the 19 to start faulting there. However, the main trouble spot on course was the double of oxers at 11ab. The 1.50m x 1.60m square oxers set two strides apart claimed six, most notably Chris Chugg and Vivant. Chris is chasing a COC with his charismatic stallion, Vivant, but a momentary hesitation caused an awkward jump at A. for four penalties. Chris however, did jump a super first round clear riding the Australian Sporthorse Breeders, Clinton stallion, ASB Conquistador, another to look better with each outing. The other four first round clears came from Julia Hargreaves who gave Haymen a lovely ride, Becky Allen with the super careful, Koyuna Ted, Wendy Schaeffer with her sensational Koyuna Sun Set and Kristy Bruhn with Habarty. This was just the second World Cup Qualifier for Kristy and the Quest For Fame Thoroughbred that the family raced, and he made the difficult course look quite easy, jumping two clear rounds for fourth place. The second round produced some wonderful jumping with Becky and Koyuna Ted racing around the sizeable track in the unbeatable time of 48.27 seconds, giving Becky her third Adelaide Word Cup victory, (Lorikeet, '04 and '05) and importantly half a COC. Wendy and Koyuna Sun Set did their best to catch the leaders, but fell short by just a whisker, (49.09s) for second place. Michelle and Animate were third, (51.26s). Julia and Haymen jumped a slick second round but unfortunately lowered the last fence for fifth place. Chris and Vivant jumped a confident second round in 52.59 to come home in sixth place. Conquistador came home with eight penalties in the second round, but it is early days yet for the impressive horse and there is consolation in half a COC. It was good to see Paul Athanasoff and Wirragulla Nicklaus back in action, and they looked as if they would easily post a clear first round, when a little distracted, Nicklaus just touched the very last fence, a 1.60m vertical on a related six stride distance from the testing double at 11ab. They made no such mistake in the second round for seventh place. Local South Australian rider, Matt Afford produced a very good four and four riding his Kaluna Thunderstruck. Queenslander, Tyrone Latham jumped a good first round with his veteran and soon to be retired, Mulberry Road, that just lowered the very last fence. But the day belonged to Becky and Ted and the magnificent Adelaide arena. The beautiful grass oval was in perfect condition and the horses jumped so well off it all week.

In Group 1, Wendy Schaeffer and Koyuna Sun Set won two classes, with Michelle Clarke claiming the Grand Prix with her typey Grannus II stallion, Belcam Gambler. Veteran jumping rider, Jeff Evans won a class in this section with his wonderful Thoroughbred, Bradly. Lachlan Manuel and his Grosvenor gelding, OP Orthodox was in the thick of it all show and jumped well. Kerri Winning's Quick Star stallion, Quincy Z with Jono Berry in the saddle showed some good form and Koyuna Ted was seldom far from the good end of the lineup. Emily Blinkworth and her CP Romantic Dream showed glimpses of brilliance, most notably taking second place in the tough Grand Prix.

Wendy Schaeffer, when she could spare time from her Eventing commitments, won two Group 2 classes with her Koyuna Sun Dancer. Wendy headed to Sydney at the end of the week for the Sydney Three Day Event and then flew back to Adelaide for the World Cup. Wonder Woman could not do better. Becky Allen won two classes in this section with the Allan family's RSB Jacana. The big, scopey mare by Metall (by Olympic Ferro) just keeps getting better and better. The mare won the Julie Wilson Photography Prize for Best Performed Young Jumping Horse, an award she also took out at Sydney last April. Andrew Inglis did well with his and Jenny Sheppard's imported Darco mare, Amira. Julia Hargreaves was often spoted in the line up with Amelia Hawthorne's whiter than white, Vertical Horizons. Brook Dobbin produced some good rounds with his relatively new, Belcam Advisor, bought from Kristy Bruhn. George Sanna was as always an education to watch and impressed with the Chatham Park Sporthorses imported Heartbreaker mare, CP Aprilla.

Jamie Kermond opened Group 3 with victory riding Des Russell's imported stallion, Valhalla. Jamie really has the horse by Quattro out of a Clinton mare going forward and jumped well throughout the section, including taking second place in the last class. Sheridan Manuel continued his good form from Brisbane with his mother Lisa's eye catching and careful, Paint, Renmarno that won a class and was placed throughout the section. Popular local rider, Clayton Kennedy won a class riding GH Vertigo, as did Jeff Bloomfield riding John and Rae Brice's, MEC Gamekeeper by Belcam Gambler. Jeff also jumped some super rounds riding John Brice and Tim Clarke's Anton. The expressive stallion by Abke was imported as a foal by the Belcam Stud. He will certainly be a horse to watch. Kristy Bruhn did well with Raylyn Jack and the combined efforts throughout the show, including riding Romantic Idol in the Speed section earned Kristy the Champion Jumping Rider of the Show Award. Jenny Sheppard claimed the Champion Jumping Horse award with her own, Paul Kelly and Andrew Inglis' Licara that did particularly well in the Speed section.

Victories in the Junior section went to Lucy Bowden and Gilbert Street, Paige Jardine with Terrific, Nicole Bruggeman riding Diamonds Are Few, Gemma Creighton aboard Just a Touch, and Melissa Julius taking out the Junior Grand Prix riding her, Uptown Johnny. There was plenty of interest in the Junior Section, with almost 60 entering for the 25 places on offer. Gemma Creighton, daughter of international jumping rider and Olympian, guy Creighton, claimed the Champion Junior Jumping Rider Award, with consistent performances from, Music Master, It's Jealousy and Champion Junior Jumping Horse, Just a Touch.
