| Weekend of World Cups coverage brought to you by Bates Saddles Australia - 7th May 2010 | |

Join Horse Deals, Bates Australia, and Julie Wilson for the much anticipated Weekend of World CupsLINK TO LIVE RESULTS BELOW! Sydney's Equestrian Weekend of World Cups. Sydney International Equestrian Centre. 7th-9th May. By Anna Sharpley. The horse enthusiast got plenty of value for money on the weekend, with over 300 horses entered in various eventing categories from Preliminary to World Cup, as well as a boutique and talented selection of showjumpers performing both outdoors and in the SIEC indoor arena. However, it was the top level of the sport that had the crowd on the edge of their seats. The format of the HSBC/FEI World Cup has changed and there is no longer an international final. (Last year the final was conducted in Poland) In 2010 the top 15 riders after the 12 World Cup classes conducted from New Zealand all the way around the world to Ireland will share US$180,000. Megan Jones took Kirby Park Irish Jester to New Zealand and won, and time will tell if their second place in Sydney will be sufficient to take home the $US 50,000 odd for winning the series. Megan unofficially leading the series after Sydney, will have to wait until the end of August, with the last World Cup held in Germany 26-29th. Each of the three World Cup phases saw a different leader. Heath Ryan won the dressage with his lovely Medallion gelding, Mystery Whisper that jumped beautifully across country, albeit a little slowly for the addition of 14 time penalties. Megan and Jester were just 0.6 behind in the dressage and with only four time penalties to add over Wayne Copping's testing track, rather as expected took the lead after day two. Christopher Burton was well placed after the dressage phase riding Jade and Jean Findlay's big Warmblood mare by Lander, Holstein Park Leilani, holding fourth with 46.5 penalties. It is debatable whether being held on course (because of an incident further down the track) is a hindrance or a help and indeed can be both. However, despite or because of the enforced halt, Chris and Leilani bowled home under time and were one of only four (two from Shane Rose not surprisingly) of the 28 to start to do so. Chris and Leilani were again one of only four combinations to jump clear showjumping to win the Sydney HSBC/FEI World Cup by 0.50. WEG Team selection is a real possibility for this talented combination, but it will all depend on a qualifying run at the Melbourne Three Day Event CCI3* on the Queens Birthday weekend in June. Megan was so unlucky with Jester jumping his careful best, however he just breathed on the back rail of an oxer and much to the dismay of the crowd, as Megan is undoubtedly a favorite, the rail fell in slow motion. Twenty-two year old New Zealand rider, Clarke Johnstone was another to finish on his dressage score riding his impressive big Thoroughbred, Orient Express which saw them finish in third place. Clarke also won the Brighton Saddlery CIC2* with his Korlora Stud Secrets which was produced by Michelle Lang-McMahon and campaigned by Chris Burton. Heath and Mystery Whisper were looking super in the final phase when a miscommunication resulted in a stop. The jumping and time penalties accrued saw them finish in a still creditable ninth place. Sonja Jonson and the wonderful Ringwould Jaguar are never far away, and with just 1.6 time penalties to add across country and one uncharacteristic rail in the jumping phase saw this now legendary combination finish in fourth place. Bates Saddles CSI/W. The second qualifier of the 2010 season conducted in the SIEC indoor represented a view of the interesting future ahead for domestic jumping and in particular highlighted two impressive World Cup newcomers. Interestingly we had to wait until the fourth place getter, the evergreen Grant Hughes with his Yakity Yak until World Cup points were allotted. Yak, the Champion jumper from Sydney Royal was himself only jumping in his third World Cup qualifier. Eighteen horses had jumped and none had gone clear, with seven on four penalties. Jamie Kermond was last to go riding Jackie Cox's scopey Colman mare, ASB Colthaga. Produced by Chris Chugg, Jamie has been riding the mare now for about a year. John Vallance's track was tough enough for the assembled entries and set at 1.45-1.50m. Understandably most faults were accumulated at the treble 10abc, vertical, one stride, oxer, one stride vertical with fence nine, a vertical, a long four strides from the oxer at eight also influential. Jamie and the grey mare made the difficult look easy and much to the delight of the now quite involved spectators, jumped clear. The second round consisted of the seven on four penalties, with Jamie and Colthaga the last to go. Ingrid Clarke and her PS Monet were making their World Cup debut and what an impression they made. The Matisse gelding has been prominent in young horse classes and is starting to really make an impression at Grand Prix level. They were clear until the very last fence, (a wall), in the first round and jumped clear in the second. Ingrid does a good job and Monet is everything you want in a jumper, brave, scopey and careful, and attractive to boot. Their effort saw them finish in fifth place on time, but they received second place World Cup points. Third points went to David Robertson and his wonderful, talented Thoroughbred, Sharpe Seal. They had an unlucky four penalties in the first round, (at the first) and in an effort to put the pressure on in the second round, again lowered a rail, but in the second fastest time of the day. They finished in sixth place. Billy Raymont had two rides, Levitation NZPH and Cortaflex Nicalette NZPH. Both had four penalties in the first round, but it was Nicalette that jumped clear and fast in the second round to take third place, but no World Cup points. Wendy Schaeffer's super Koyuna Sun Set was back in action after a slight injury sustained at Sydney Royal. Wendy chose to start her Koyuna Sun Dancer first; the horse transferred from the Eventing World Cup to the Jumping World Cup, and I would be surprised if anyone else in the world could do that today. Sun Dancer jumped a four penalty round, as did a rather strong, Sun Set. Sun Dancer missed the cut for the second round, but Wendy was determined to put the pressure on Jamie and threw caution to the wind, posting a second round clear in 44.24 seconds, which was good enough for second place, but again no World Cup points, as Sun Set was Wendy's second ride. Jamie and Colthaga jumped an easy clear not doubt under rather a lot of pressure to impressively win their first World Cup start together. It had been rather a long time between drinks for Jamie, as he last won a World Cup class with his 2006 WEG partner, Stylish King at Shepparton in 2004. With an impressive team of horses, I don't think it will be anything like as long before the talented rider strikes again. | |
