Sydney Showjumping Club - 28th Jan 2006

What a weekend! Sensational Showjumping at Clarendon! Sydney Showjumping Club's Big Four Pre Tempo Show at Clarendon on the weekend exceeded all expectations! Superlatives flowed as sponsors and spectators enjoyed the spectacle of nearly 900 entries compete over the two days. The very best competitors from all over Australia contested courses designed by master Course designer Graeme Watts from Queensland, and guest Level 3 Irish course designer John O'Boyle. Thanks to the tireless work by the Paul Tridgell led SSJC Committee; the Clarendon grounds were in superb condition. Judges Ken Dolden and Katrina Dukats officiated in 30 plus degree temperatures tempered by an occasional breeze. Day one saw Glossodia veteran George Sanna dominant in the main ring with wins in the two feature classes on his imported horses Kopa11 and CP Licato. Despite a nasty fall, Deon Williams from Bega still managed two wins on Carol Mason's Mudjimba and BP Jaguar. South Australian Amy Graham had a good win in the Young Rider, with Tim Dreverman, Jamie Smith, James Hetherington, Bonnie Martin, Natsha Coxon, Wayne Moyes and Amber Fuller also in the winners circle. Day 2 delighted organizers by being even more spectacular than the first. Young rider Belinda Prestwidge impressed with her win in the Young Rider on Mr Chipps, with star eventers Shane Rose and Chris Burton scoring wins each. Colleen Brook from Wilberforce was stylish on Aerobatics for a win in the C Grade. Young rider Hilary Scott impressed with a great win in the Mini Prix on her newly imported mare Indra, with the ever-competitive Gail Hunter scoring two wins. Stacey Swetnam, Natsha Coxon, Wayne Moyes also scored wins, but it was the Grand Prix that proved to be the stand out event! Graeme Watts had built an open flowing track that was "tough enough", but still with a view to encouraging the horses that were heading to the Tempo world Cup at SIEC next weekend. Graeme explained his objectives by saying, "No matter how good a course designer you think you are, if you don't produce horses jumping confidently, we haven't got a sport"! Chris Chugg of Glossodia had saved the 14 year old Diamond B Ego especially for this event and in an exciting 4 horse jump off was simply unbeatable! Rod Brown and Mr Burns were impressively consistent for second place, having also placed second on the first day to Licato in the Grand Prix Warm Up Class. Current Australian Champion Vickie Roycroft from Mount White was impressive to have two in the jump off for third and fourth place on Ricardo D and Copabella Visage. Congratulations also to Vicki on her recent appointment as Chairman of the National Showjumping Council. Excluded from the jump off with time faults, Paul Athanasoff on Wirragulla Nicolas and Chris Chugg on Alondra gave outstanding performances in the first round for 5th & 6th placing. Delighted sponsors affirmed their support for an even better repeat event next year, and organizers and competitors concurred that it had been a sensational weekend of Showjumping!
