Marcie Lash is not sure when she will be returning to Darwin, as she has been having such a successful time 'down south' since she arrived last November for the Hack Nationals. Marcie rode her 'Cheraton Mikado' by Kirreway Rialto out of Indi Dimity who was declared Supreme Champion Ridden Part Welsh Exhibit., Supreme Champion Show Hunter and Grand Champion Ridden Open Exhibit..

2006 Welsh National Show
Tatura Exhibition Centre
Saturday 11th March.

By Anna Sharpley.

The Show this year could really make claim to being a National event, as the show received entries from every State and Territory in the country. Yes even the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Since arriving from Darwin in November, Marcie Lash has really made her presence felt in Welsh and indeed Open competition with her Cheraton Mikado. The Part Welsh pony by Kirreway Rialto out of Indi Dimity had a super show once again taking out the Ridden Part Welsh Championship, the Show Hunter Championship and at the evening presentation, the Best Ridden Exhibit Award. Whilst on the subject of Ridden Champions, it is interesting to note that the Grand Champion Ridden Welsh Exhibit, Danielle Galea's Cheraton Arianwen is from the same stud and also by Kirreway Rialto. (Arianwen is out of Cheraton Sonata.) Marcie is having such a time of it 'down south' that she is not sure when she will return to Darwin and may even move down permanently.

Lucy Hocking received every girl's dream Christmas present last year in the form of Weston Park Chorister. The five-year-old B gelding by Eyarth Sama (imp) out of Weston Chanel has been the subject of media attention when shown by breeder and former owner, Janet Evans. The typey Chorister left none of his success behind as he claimed Best Welsh Section B Exhibit, Champion Led Welsh Senior Exhibit and defeated a class field to be declared Best Welsh In Hand.

The Welsh Cobs were as always both impressive and delightful and if you are after a great athletic performance, you need not go to Melbourne for the Commonwealth Games. You need look no further than Mark Brown in partnership with Cheryl Bunting's Section D colt, Bookra Legal Edition. Cheryl is a good mover herself but both Mark and Legal Edition have, to use a dressage term, super movement. The Cob by Wingana Welsh Flyer out of Barnon Graceful Edition was awarded Best Welsh Cob Exhibit. Teresa Townsend's impressive Section C, Cataraqui Hasufel, by Nattai Sprig out of Cataraqui Arielle really added to the Cob's good showing at the Nationals. The gleaming black colt was declared Supreme Led Welsh Youngstock from again a strong field and at the evening presentation, Best Welsh Pony of Cob Type.

After a full day of competition the show moved into the Tatura Indoor arena for the Premier Welsh Sale, for which there was a great deal of interest, the Special Awards Presentation and the inaugural Goulburn Valley Ridden Native Pony Championships. The Championships were the brainchild of well known Welsh and Hunting identity, Gary Le Brocq. "The idea for the Goulburn Valley Ridden Native Pony Championships came from watching the Mountain and Moorland classes in the UK. The qualifying shows attract huge entries with ponies vying for a place in the finals at the Horse of the Year Show. People travel all over the UK to qualify their ponies. There is huge demand in England for saddle animals from all the Native Pony breeds. By staging this Championship event I wanted to show what we are trying to achieve and aim to provide good prize money for finalists". Gary invited the ponies this year and is keen to hear from anyone interested in putting on a Native Pony qualifier. (Gary Le Brocq 03 5725 1995).

Eleven breeds were represented, Welsh D, Connemara, New Forest, Highland, Fjord, Welsh C, Welsh B, Australian, Welsh A, Dartmoor and Shetland. Vicki Maurice-Smith's Welsh B, Oak Park Fontana was the inaugural winner. It is probably fair to say that the Welsh B ponies are ridden more often and in the broader, open community, which would give them the edge in this competition. However, it is up to the others to put in twelve months of work to make the Ridden Pony Championship a much-anticipated competition.

The Tatura Exhibition Centre is becoming a popular show venue. With a well-watered outdoor arena, the indoor school and more permanent stables on the drawing board, it is no wonder. Tatura is also a good geographical compromise for interstate visitors. With the Autumn Welsh Show conducted on Sunday, it was again a great weekend for the Welsh.
