| Boyd Martin on a Winning Streak - 24th Jul 2008 | |
|
Both horses are generally ridden by Phillip Dutton, for whom Martin works as assistant trainer at True Prospect Farm in West Grove, Pennsylvania. Since Dutton is in England preparing for the Olympic Games, Martin has taken over training and competing his horses for the summer. Stuart is old territory for Martin, who also placed second the event last year riding August Vettorino's Match Play, (and third on his own Neville Bardos), when Dutton was in Rio de Janeiro competing in the Pan-American Games. "I knew I only had an outside chance of getting on the training squad for the Olympics, and since Phillip was selected it's nice that I have the opportunity to ride so many quality horses for the next couple of months," he said. Martin is used to riding a lot of horses every weekend, often taking eight or nine horses to an event and competing in several divisions. This weekend, at least he only had to walk two cross-country courses! He also made time in his busy schedule to lead a cross-country course walk sponsored by Bit of Britain Saddlery. In addition to winning two divisions, Martin placed third in the open intermediate riding Remington XXV, owned by Densev Juvonen (65.3), and eighth on Clifton Imperial, owned by August Vettorino (96.5). Though Martin took the early lead in this division riding Galileo VI, owned by Christy Price, (Galileo IV was his partner in winning at Bromont), a fall of rider on cross-country meant retirement according to the recently amended rules for eventing. In the CIC**, out of 35 starters, 19 finished the competition; 3 withdrew, 7 were eliminated, one faced mandatory retirement, 4 retired and one had a technical elimination. Only nine horses jumped clear around the cross-country course and none made the optimum time. "I think Stuart, for the results, was a really tough cross-country," commented Martin. "The ticket to Bailey Wick's success was going clear on cross-country and in the stadium jumping. It was nice to hear the Australian anthem played - I have won FEI events before, but that was a first for me. It was a nice touch." Stuart Horse Trials is part of the Adequan/USEA Gold Cup Series, and the CIC** served as the "intermediate" Gold Cup division at this event. Bailey Wick and Dutton are currently ranked 16th on the Gold Cup leader board, which is dominated by Young Rider Jennie Brannigan and her young gelding Cooper, with over a 100-point lead. Brannigan plans to move east from California to train at True Prospect Farm after the North American Young Rider Championships in August. Martin's next big event will be at Richland Park, where he will have another shot at racking up some Gold Cup points. Then he is on to the American Eventing Championships near Chicago, where he has a string of young horses to compete in the Young Horse Championships, as well as a couple of upper-level horses to compete. Boyd's wife, dressage rider Silva Martin, also based at True Prospect Farm, had a successful weekend competing at the New Jersey Horse Park, where she won Third Level Tests 1 and 2 riding Sarah Sanz De Acedo's 12-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding Ballatale with 71%. Riding Waimea, a nine-year-old mare by Wallenstein out of an Alla'car mare, owned by Margo Marano, she won Third Level Test 3 (76%) and placed third in Third Level Test 2 (68%). Boyd and Silva are sponsored by Bit of Britain, Devoucoux Saddlery, and Horse Tech(tm). | |
