NVSJ Showjumping Festival - 7th Nov 2008

All eyes on Jamie Winning and 'Yandoo Vangelo' in the second round of the NVSJC World Cup Qualifier. Jamie and the talented import kept their cool and their style and were the only combination to jump a double clear to claim their first World Cup class.

Northern Victorian Show Jumping Club World Cup Qualifier
8th November.

The Shepparton World Cup Qualifier has experienced plenty of drama over the years and the 24th edition of one of the 'traditional' domestic qualifiers will be a talking point for many years to come. In the spirit of experimentation, the World Cup was moved from established Sunday afternoon schedule to Saturday. That being set, the 35-40 mls of rain on Friday that not doubt delighted the local farmers made conditions difficult indeed for the main class the next day. It was hard to remember such a wet show. No doubt there were some in the Junior classes that had never been to a wet show! The main arena was wet and whether it was too wet was a matter of much discussion, amongst the show committee, amongst the riders, between the riders and the show committee and indeed with anyone who wanted to put forth an opinion on the subject. The options discussed were to cancel the class, move it to the sand arena and or postpone it until Sunday (which had a bit of support). After everyone venturing an opinion, the class remained in its Saturday afternoon time slot, albeit somewhat later in the day and with the benefit of hindsight, proved to be the right decision. The eventual success of the class must go to the great effort and thought put in by Course Designer, David Sheppard, who with advice from former and frequent Shepparton designer, Leeson Sirrett, designed a well up to Shepparton standard track on the best available footing. In the end the ground appeared to have no ill effects on the jumping. However, the wet sadly saw the withdrawal of much anticipated combinations, Laurie lever with Ashleigh Drossel Dan and Paul Athanasoff with his wonderful stallion, Wirragulla Nicklaus.

After the first round of the strong 1.45-50m track, it looked to be pretty much a "girls own adventure". There were six clear rounds of the 23 to start and the first came from first out, Vicki Roycroft riding Infatuation. When they made the course look easy, it was thought by some that track was too easy. However, Vicki and the scopey chestnut were on song and not to be underestimated. The second clear came from Wendy Schaeffer and her Melbourne Qualifier winner, Koyuna Sun Set. Billy Raymont did his best for the battle of the sexes and jumped and impressive clear with the well bred Thoroughbred by Grosvenor, Stardom. Paula Hamood posted a clear with her experienced Ranlab Capone and she was followed by Jamie Winning with her delightful Yandoo Vangelo and Julia Hargreaves with her Gawler Qualifier winner, Copabella Haymen.

The course posed problems throughout, however the 1.47m yellow vertical at fence two caused trouble early with six of the 23 faulting there, including the per post favorites, Chris Chugg and Vivant, that adding a toe in the open water for a first round total of eight, played no further part in the class. The other main trouble spot on course was a 1.50m rustic vertical at number eight, five strides from the open water. Twelve horses faulted at this fence. Becky Allen has been in great form with Koyuna Ted and came to Shepparton straight of a victory in the Victorian Championships the weekend before at Whittlesea. Ted powered over the open water and there was some momentary disagreement between horse and rider, which resulted in Ted just ducking around the fence. "I should have my hands cut off' commented a disgusted with herself Becky. However, she made sure of no further penalty and finished with a first round total of four, along with Adam Mellers and Animate (#8), another combination to enjoy a European summer this year, and Chris Chugg with the lovely Indorado mare, Alondra (#2).

Only the four faulters and the clears came back in the second round, which if there were an equality of penalty, the time in that round would determine the placings. (Art.273.3.3). Becky was first out and made no mistake this time, jumping clear in what was to be the second fastest time of the day, 42.68 seconds. Their effort was good enough for second place. Alondra added another four to eventual eighth. Adam and Animate posted the fastest time, 41.81, but the addition of another four penalties saw them loose their grasp on a high placing and had to settle for sixth. Vicki and Infatuation jumped another good round, but the addition of four penalties in 44.94 seconds, saw the former three time Shepparton World Cup winner reasonably happy with third. Wendy and Sun Set lowered two to take seventh. Billy tried desperately for a clear, but the relatively green at this level, Stardom had one down and the slow time saw them finish fifth. Paula would have been disappointed with Capone's two down in the second round and ninth place. When Jamie Winning and Yandoo Vangelo cantered thought the finish clear, the knowledgeable crowd including Jamie's mother and grandmother let out a great cheer, as a perfect trip had been a long time coming. Just one left to go and Julia and Copabella Haymen had been in good form and posed a real threat. But as can happen in showjumping, a misunderstanding at the triple bar saw Julia and Haymen have to settle for fourth place.

Still a Young Rider, Jamie Winning from NSW has been knocking on the door of a World Cup victory this season, and now at one of the toughest qualifiers, she has it. The most heartening aspect of the Shepparton World Cup was the demonstration of the youth, quality and talent emerging on the domestic jumping scene. Chris Chug has declared his wish to go to the World Final In Las Legas next April. He now has only four qualifiers to stake his claim.
