| Victorian Riding Pony Pageant - 12th Dec 2004 | |
|
National Equestrian Centre Werribee Park 12th December. By Anna Sharpley This now traditional pre Christmas Riding Pony banquet has over the years been somewhat of a moveable feast. The Pageant has been conducted with success at both the Yarra Glen and Lancefield showgrounds in the past but this year settled on the polocrosse field at Werribee. Not many who have visited the National Equestrian Centre would liken it to the tropical Far North, but the recent heavy rains and humid weather produced a beautiful lush green field of play, with the seemingly slow growing trees buoyed by their good fortune. The programme was increased this year to include Part Bred Welsh and Arabian Derivatives giving the competitors a class or two more, making the day more worthwhile, not only in terms of the much sought after ribbons but also, especially for the youngsters, experience in the ring. Well-known and successful Riding Pony exhibitor and breeder, Kerry Dunstan was in charge of the Riding Pony Youngstock In Hand and the Ridden Show Ponies, with Michael Holzer judging the Senior In Hand and the Show Hunters both In Hand and Ridden. Rosie Metherall was well in charge of the Newcomer Riding Ponies and Childrens Ponies with Louise Doyle testing the judging waters with the Junior Handler classes and Dean Matthews taking care of the Part Welsh and Arabian Derivative classes. Melinda Ralph had a great show with her mare, Grand Parade. Shown by Billy Warke, Grand Parade, by Peter Ronzio's Fairlight Acres Kristian out of the Thoroughbred mare, Picture, was declared Champion Mare in Hand and went on, with a very grown up looking Whitney Hunt in the saddle to take out the Weston Mirage Memorial Grand Champion Ridden Pony. Judge, Kerry Dunstan described Grand Parade as "a lovely Thoroughbred type, but still with plenty of pony character who was given a good ride and worked well". Anthony and Frank Cincotta did well to win their own prize. They sponsored the Cincotta Supreme Youngstock Exhibit and claimed the award with Janevelyn Hearts on Fire, a two-year-old colt by Weston Mirage out of the John and Janet Petty bred Glyndbourne Minelli. "He has a beautiful head and turn of front and covered the ground well" commented judge Kerry Dunstan. Hearts on Fire went on to be declared the Falconhurst and Langtree Stud's Grand Champion Show Pony In Hand Exhibit. Weston Mirage was recognised again in Nicole Guppy's Champion Youngstock Gelding, Janevelyn Truth or Dare out of Kentucky Meadows Sweet Sherry. Interestingly his full brother, Wendy Waldock's Janevelyn Chivas Regal was declared Reserve Champion Youngstock Gelding. Pauline and Terry van Heythuysen's Kolbeach Vogue was another Champion 'bred in the purple'. The very composed yearling filly by Fernleigh Fine Print is out of a daughter of the great four time Barastoc Galloway of the Year, Covers. She was declared RPSBS Show Committee Best Yearling Show Pony Exhibit and Reserve Champion Youngstock Filly. The Victorian Riding Pony Stud Book Society committee have co opted some 'new and youthful' members, who together with the more experienced hands and along with efficient and always approachable RPSBS Secretary, Paul Seuren were again responsible for a wonderful day of showing. | |
