The stalwart of British dressage 45 has long been held in high regard on the equestrian world stage. A revered rider Hester is also one of the top international trainers and coach to his team mate Charlotte Dujardin. But Hester was not handed success on a plate and his rise to the top began on a donkey. The animal was the only means of transport on the Channel Island of Sark where the dressage star was raised. It was not until he reached 16 that Hester learned to ride a horse. Several years later he applied for a job at a riding centre in Hampshire and was given his first opportunity to compete. He won his first national dressage title in 1985. There followed a glittering career and the veteran rider, who runs his own yard in Newent, Gloucestershire, eventually won European team gold last year. Away from the stables, he has co-written two books on dressage and has developed a new type of rein which he named after one of his horses, Fantastic Elastic. | |
