Chautauqua's career in tatters after refusing to jump again

The career of one-time world champion sprinter Chautauqua is hanging by a thread after the grey flash again refused to jump from the barriers in a Rosehill barrier trial on Monday morning.

While most eyes were firmly fixed on the world's best horse Winx, Chautauqua dug his heels in and didn't leave with the rest of the field, putting his racing career in grave jeopardy.

Stewards only needed the three-time TJ Smith Stakes winner to jump successfully one more time before clearing him to return to racing in the Missile Stakes, but will now reconvene after the issues which plagued him during autumn resurfaced.

Tommy Berry flew in from Hong Kong to ride Chautauqua in a Flemington jumpout earlier this month when he left the gates without issue, but a return to Sydney has brought with it a return to old ways.

"He felt fine going to the barriers, but as soon as he walked into the gates I pretty much knew he wasn't going to jump," Berry said.

"He was leaning back at the back of the barriers and the other day he was kicking around and wanted to get on with the job. For some reason today that wasn't the case.

"The way he looked and felt was no different and I was very happy with him apart from not jumping. It's disappointing."

Racing NSW stewards will await a discussion between Chautauqua's connections later on Monday before deciding a course of action.

His owners GPI Racing own a slot in the $13 million The Everest and were hopeful Chautauqua would mend his barrier manners to have another shot at the world's richest turf race, but he could conceivably never race again after missing his entire autumn campaign.

The horse would be expected to trial without a hitch a series of times before returning to the races if they were to pursue a return to the track.

Winx coasted to the line on Monday's barrier trial under Hugh Bowman to finish near the tail of the field in a trial won by She Will Reign.
