Creek's Casino Wizard heartbreak

Trusty, reliable geldings who back up year in and year out are hard not to love in our industry. Not all are Manikatos, Kingston Towns, Bufferings, or Hartnells but some tug just at our heart strings for their reliability and endurance.

One such horse in South Australia was Casino Wizard. He wasn't a Group 1 winner but the trusty nine-year-old from Mount Gambier boasted a 25 per cent winning strike-rate. A winner of 16 of his 64 starts and more than $750,000 in prizemoney, he was a ripper.

He was first spotted by Lee Creek, who would train him throughout his career, as a weanling in a paddock in Mount Gambier. Passed in later as a yearling at the Adelaide Magic Millions Sales, Creek subsequently snapped him up and syndicated him for $15,000.
