'Deliberate attempt to choke' brumby, rendering it lame, sees Tamworth man fined for act of cruelty

A Tamworth man filmed choking a brumby in the Kosciuszko National Park while on holiday has described his actions as "a stupid thing to do", a court has heard.

Graeme Philip Burchell, 61, was sentenced in the Cooma Local Court today to a 14-month community correction order for committing an act of cruelty upon an animal, and a $700 fine for injuring an animal in a park in November 2018.

Court documents reveal Burchell was camping in the park in the Snowy Mountains with family and friends as part of a horse riding trip when the incident occurred.
