Horse owners invited to be NEIGHbourly and shareride a #horsecheck

Horse owners are invited to register and bring their horse along for free services at a new #horsecheck community day promoting horse health and identification. Horse weight, teeth, and microchip status will be checked for no charge, along with the opportunity to talk with an equine veterinarian.

“In preparation for the summer bushfire season, and to promote regular health checks for horses, Horse SA has partnered with Fleurieu Equine Clinic to have these free checks available’ said Julie Fiedler, Executive Officer for Horse SA.

Community days such as these are more commonly associated with dogs, cats and other companion animals, raising awareness about regular health care for all animals.

Horse owners are invited to connect with neighbours and agistees, and if needed, to arrange a ride-share for horses, or to get a group together and arrange commercial transport.

“Frantic owners wish to be reunited with their horses as quickly as possible after separation, which in South Australia is often triggered by a bushfire event’ said veterinarian Dr James Meyer. ‘Checking a horse’s microchip can make sure the number matches the owner’s contact details held in a microchip register and by the horse’s regular veterinarian’.

Bushfires often result in damaged fencing, leading to horses and other livestock wandering on roads.

A range of optional services will be available on the day at discount rates, such as microchipping. First Aid kits are also for sale. Horse SA will be manning an information table, which will include bushfire planning brochures from the Country Fire Service.

Interested horse owners can register their horse for the #healthcheck day to be held at the Fleurieu Equine Clinic, Goolwa, on Sunday 29 September by contacting Dr James Meyer on Ph: 1300 046 773.
