Increased Testing, More Restrictions Announced for Participants at Tokyo Olympics 86 Days from Opening

Increased Covid-19 testing and more restrictions will be imposed on participants–athletes, officials, media–at the Olympics in Tokyo just 86 days before opening, the organizing groups announced Wednesday.

The new restrictions, toughened from earlier requirements for the Games already delayed for a year, were announced by the International Olympic and Paralympic Committees, Tokyo Organizing Committee,Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the government of Japan that they said was agreement on measures to ensure safe organization of the Games.

Foreign spectators have already been banned from the Games. A decision on Japanese spectators will be made in June.

Rulebooks that were published two months ago have been “reviewed and significantly updated” to deal with “the emergence of new mutant coronavirus strains and the evolving situation of the pandemic.”
