It's not about the ribbons - Hartnell starts his new life

Hartnell, the most popular horse Godolphin has imported to Australia, has started training for his new career as a show horse but for his custodian Reg Fleming it’s certainly not about the ribbons.

Fleming, Bart Cummings' former right-hand man and now assistant to grandson James at Godolphin, has seen more good racehorses than most.

There may have been others with more talent and more elite wins to their name than four-time Group I winner Hartnell.

But Hartnell has a very special spot in Fleming’s heart.

It’s why Fleming was so emotional when he was entrusted as Hartnell’s career when the grand galloper retired from racing after having his 58th start when finishing third behind Magic Wand in the Group I Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington last spring.
