NT environmental watchdog orders audit after Darwin Turf Club fails to comply with licence

The Darwin Turf Club falsely declared it had completed mandatory environmental monitoring after mixing tens of thousands of litres of oil into its track for two straight years, internal club documents show.

The club is licenced through the NT Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to apply 60,000 litres of hydrocarbons into the sand-based track at Fannie Bay twice a year to improve the racing surface.

Under its licence, the club is required to conduct air, ground and water monitoring to ensure any contaminants remain within approved guidelines.

However, minutes from a board meeting in March last year show the club failed to meet its obligations for the preceding two years, though the club's former CEO, Keith Stacy, told the EPA the monitoring had been done.
