Caroline, how did Phantom come into your life? Seventeen years ago, when we were reading Horse Deals looking for a competitive junior showjumper for our then 11-year-old son Tom, my husband Jeffrey saw Phantom advertised. We were very fortunate to buy him, within the hour, sight unseen. We took a risk, but wow it has paid off!

Known history before you? We purchased Phantom off the Prestwidge family from Sydney after their daughter Belinda outgrew him.

Why is Phantom one in a million? We were so lucky the day we purchased Phantom. He proved to be a very competitive junior horse for Tom, then a few years down the track our daughter Kate decided she wanted to show him as a show hunter galloway. Kate and Phantom won many championships in both show hunter classes and rider classes. There were quite a few arguments (and fisticuffs) when Tom needed Phantom for his junior jump off and Kate needed him for her champion rider or hunter, of course at exactly the same time!

What is he up to today? At the age of 20, we decided Phantom had done enough for our family, but parting with him was never an option. For 10 years we gave him the lovely retirement he deserved, until just recently when our two beautiful granddaughters needed a unicorn. Of course, we had the very best unicorn in our back paddock, so out came the clippers and a clean up and this weekend he’s off to his first pony club gymkhana with six-year-old Sophia.
