Kelly, how did your One In A Million pony come into your life? We were looking for a first pony for Lucy when she was just three, when we saw Hamish advertised and went and had a look at him. He was super cute and just a bit cheeky. I could see he was going to make a great lead rein pony so we ended up buying him.

Known history before you? Hamish was bred by a Helen Shard who bred Welsh ponies and named him after a NZ bottle of wine. He then started life as a child’s pony and did one season in the show ring before we bought him.

Share with us why your pony was One In A Million. Hamish is a pony with a lot of character that kept us on our toes. He was like a playground for Lucy. I could trust him to let her clamber all over him, slide off him and just have lots of fun on. His life revolves around a blade of grass and because he lived on a diet, would often see Lucy being dragged off on the end of the lead for Hamish to get to grass. When we took him out competing he was always Mr Perfect and loved the show ring and the camera. His biggest challenge was when we dressed him up as the Bat Car and he took it all in his stride.

What is your pony up to today? Hamish is now with an amazing family in the South Island where he has two young girls to fuss over him and do his best to get treats from.
