Weather Gods to smile on Toowoomba Polocrosse Club’s annual carnival

Despite cooler overnight temperatures being expected for the next week in Oakey, Toowoomba Polocrosse Club members are considering themselves lucky with fine weather forecast for their annual carnival on the weekend. Over the past 10 years, heavy rain has played havoc with Toowoomba Polocrosse Club’s carnival, causing multiple carnival cancellations but 2018 looks set to change that.

Toowoomba Polocrosse Club President Joanne Lossberg said the Club was excited with the forecast and expected the carnival to attract a larger number of teams than previous years. “With the perfect weather conditions and one of the New South Wales carnivals being cancelled for this weekend, we also expect we’ll pick up a few players from interstate,” she said.

The drought conditions in the area have however caused other issues for the Club with them, like many other Clubs in Queensland, having to spend many man hours preparing the fields at Oakey Showgrounds to ensure a safe playing surface for horse and rider. Mrs. Lossberg said the fields were in amazing condition after being plowed. “The fields are soft and will be great for horses to stop and turn on safely,” she said.

The action packed competition, often referred to as rugby on horseback, will feature Open, Junior and Mini Juniors divisions.

Toowoomba, which has always been known as a family Club, has experienced peaks and troughs in membership over the years as people move to and from the area. Mrs Lossberg said in 2018, they have enough riding members to field 2 teams but would like to see that increase. She invited anybody thinking about trying the sport of polocrosse to come along on the weekend and see the action. “Entry is free for spectators, so it is a great opportunity to see how the game is played and talk with players to see why they play,” she said.

Anyone who can ride a horse can play polocrosse at an amateur/club level and unlike polo, only one horse per player is needed, making polocrosse an affordable family sport.

Toowoomba Polocrosse Club’s exciting equestrian action is expected to kick off at Oakey Showgrounds at 8am on Saturday and Sunday. A canteen will be running all weekend from Friday night and on Saturday night a 2 course dinner will be available for only $10.
