Winx gives superstar touch to opening day of The Championships

There will be a superstar start to the first day of The Championships with Winx to have a gallop at Randwick on Saturday.

Chris Waller’s super mare will step on to Randwick at 11.50am to have a hit-out with Hugh Bowman in the saddle before the first of 10 races. It will be the final public outing before she shoots for her 33rd consecutive win and 25th group 1 in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes on April 13.

“It will gives her a day out. She will get on her toes and have a bit of sweat and feel the butterflies, like we all will over the next 10 days,” Waller said. “It is just something that works with her.

“We dare not change anything with her because it has worked so well throughout her career and she seems to thrive off a gallop like that.”

The ATC is expecting general admission for Winx’s farewell to racing on the second day of The Championships to sell out by next week. Only 2000 tickets left today. ATC chief executive Jamie Barkley believes it will be a great way to start The Championships.

“This Saturday not only has four group 1 races including the great Sydney tradition of Doncaster and Australian Derby Day, but an added star attraction in Winx,’’ Barkley said.

“Winx is a once in a lifetime champion and Sydney is getting one of its last chances to see her live and in action this Saturday.

“We are starting to prepare to announce a sellout on Queen Elizabeth Stakes as early as next week, so fans need to lock general admission tickets in now for that day and also this Saturday.’’
