Winx has a family photo before heading for a well earned rest

The next couple of months for Winx will be in a paddock that has been reserved for her since she was a three-year-old. And it's clear she'll be missed while trainer Chris Waller ponders a spring target, likely to be the Cox Plate.

Her imperious display in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes victory continued a three-year unbeaten run and her winning streak to 25, matching Black Caviar, and the celebrations extended to a family photo with Waller’s team of staff at Rosehill on Tuesday.

The champion mare will have six to eight weeks off at her usual spelling farm, where she will also be pre-trained, before returning for her spring preparation. It is likely to start in the Warwick Stakes at the end of August, as it has for the past two years, which will be known as the Winx Stakes when run as a group 1 for the first time this year.

"She will basically wind down for a few days and chill out before we send her off to the spelling farm to have a nice relaxing time,” Waller said Melbourne radio on Sunday.

He is well aware of the public interest in Winx and will make it clear where she will go in the spring later in the year, but he did mention the Cox Plate.

The fans deserve to be told the truth about her and not led astray. We can’t thank them enough for all the accolades she has been given because that really is something special. More special than where she is heading,” Waller said.

“The main aim is to look after her. It’s a bit like watching over a boxer’s career. You want to continue at the top of their field as athletes."

“If at any time, whether it be the day before her first-up run or before the Cox Plate I am not happy with her, she won’t run.”
