A New Spin
Regional Victoria Reining is Reining Australia’s newest Affiliate with 2021 their first season of competition. Their 2021 calendar holds two Reining Australia Qualifying Ribbon Shows, ‘A New Spin’ in May and ‘Slide into Nationals’ in July. In addition to their Affiliate Qualifying Shows they are planning a ‘Ranch & Reining’ competition and a ‘Work That Cow’ clinic/ribbon show later in the year.

The Club’s motto ‘Come Join Us’ is exactly what they are all about. Their plan of hosting clinics followed by ribbon shows, allows participants new to Reining have a day of learning followed by the opportunity to put together a Reining pattern and be scored by a judge in a fun and relaxed environment. With reining professionals and members of the Reining Trainers Australia are supporting the new comers with encouraging advice on how to improve the pattern they just ran.

The Show Program ran a full slate of Reining Australia National sanctioned classes but included a couple of non-sanctioned classes for the new members to participate in.

The first class of the day, Rookie 1 & Rookie 2, is for non-professional riders who have competed their way out of the RA Green Rider program. It is considered the first tier level of non-pro competition the same way Rookie Professional is the first tier of professional competition. Heidi Bast on Condor Pepperlena and Chrissy Watson on Big River Little Miss Curley Cat became Co-Champions of Rookie 1 on a score of 66.5 with Shelly Biancon on Shiney and Gay being awarded third place with a score of 61.5.

Novice Horse and the first of the non-sanctioned classes came next, and hosted the largest number of competitors for the day. In Reining, the eligibility for Novice Horse classes is determined by the earnings of the horse as opposed to rider earnings. Novice Horse is also broken down even further into Open and Non-Pro divisions. At A New Spin, Novice Horse Non-pro L1 was championed by Chrissy Watson on Big River Little Miss Curley Cat by only half a point to Heidi Bast on Condor Pepperlena with Mel Dennis on Gunner Be A Calboy taking third place. Novice Horse Open L1 was championed by David Norbury on Red Whizz A Storm and Reserved Championed by Mick Taylor on Einsteins Set N Drift with third place going to David Norbury on Gunnerlicious. The first Non-Sanctioned class of the day saw three first time Reiners produce very respectful scores and placing’s. Tim O’Brien on his three year old One More Sandman took out first place with a 66.5 with his wife Jo O’Brien taking out second place on Rose N Shine and third place went to Adrian Ireland on Ima Smooth Blue Freckle.

The Reining Australia Thomas Arena Products Green Rider Series is where is all begins. This year the top ten horses and riders from the RA Green Rider L1 & L2 classes will go through to a clean slate Shoot Out with a Southern Cross saddle and Champion buckle up for grabs. At the Regional Victoria Reining Qualifier it was a well contested class with all riders hoping to get a score to qualify them to attend the National Show. With a score of 65 Annette Mossmann claimed the Champion title, Heidi Bast and Condor Pepperlena were Reserve Champions and third place went to Donna Brister on Big River Cashed Up Chrome. Donna Brister on Cashed Up Chrome were also Champions of the RA Green Rider L2. Adrian Ireland and Ima Smooth Blue Freckle won the Non-Sanctioned division with a score of 60.5.

Up next up was the Non-Pro Limited and Non-Pro Intermediate classes which are the next step up in earning levels from the Rookie class. The Limited Non-Pro Champion on a score of 67 was Kate Nikolic on Get N It Again with Reserve Champion DC Cadillac Jack and Bonnie Grosso while Mel Dennis on Gunner Be A Calboy gained third place. The Intermediate Non-Pro Champion was DC Cadillac Jack and Bonnie Grosso.

Back in to the pen came the Open riders to compete in Limited Open, Intermediate Open and Rookie Professional. Qualified in the Limited Open in first place was with a score of 70 was David Norbury on Red Whizz A Storm, in second place with a score of 69 was Steph Lancefield on QP Rufinstein and third place went to Bonnie Grosso and DC Cadillac Jack. Qualified in the Intermediate Open as the Champion was Bonnie Grosso and DC Cadillac Jack with Amanda Halliday and Wimpskey her Reserve Champion. Amanda Halliday and Wimpskey also topped the leader board for the Rookie Professional class. At the conclusion of presentations Adrian Ireland was awarded the Judge’s encouragement award supplied by Rufnit Ranch and Rodeo Rage Designs.

Reining Australia’s Youth and Parra Reining classes were the 6th set of classes to qualify at the Regional Victoria Reining show. The Champion for the Youth 13 & Under was Adel Osler on her horse Chromosone with a score of 62. Joslyn Grover and Hollywood Bar Chic were the Champions of the Para Reining with a score of 65.5.

The last set of classes for the day was the Open, Non-Pro and Prime Time Non-Pro. Prime Time Non-Pro is a class where the rider has to be at least 50 years of age. The Non-Pro class was won by Bonnie Grosso on DC Cadillac Jack with a score of 69.5. The Prime Time Non-Pro was championed by Chrissy Watson on Big River Little Miss Curly Cat with a score of 64.5. The Open was won on the highest score of the day a 71 earned by Lana Kelderman on Wizznt Me followed by her mother Kate Elliott on QP Dun Gun It with a score of 70 and third place went to Bonnie Grosso and DC Cadillac Jack with a score of 69.5.

That’s it, Regional Victoria Reining’s first show is done and dusted. The next ‘Fine Tune Friday Clinic’ and Qualifying Show ‘Slide into Nationals’ is scheduled for 23rd & 24th July at Tatura Park. The committee would like to thank their judge, Pam Spokes and her scribe Kerri-Ann Hobbs as well as their announcer Ryan Jellesma who drove from South Australia to support the new club. Regional Victoria Reining would also like to thank their sponsors Breakoday Quarter Horses, David Norbury Training Stables, Gary Browne Training, Lancefield Bloodstock, Quarter Plus, Little Rock Ranch, Thomas Arena Products, Vecta Group P/L, Rufnit Ranch owner of QP Dunit Lika Rockstar, Qest Environmental, Rose-Hip Vital, 4CYTE Epiitalis, Horse Deals, Ravens Lodge, Total Equine Genetics, Janelle Cooper Art, Powerhouse Productions and Rodeo Rage Designs.
