Brumby country: the fight over feral horses in the Barmah-Millewa forest

Tensions over plans to eradicate brumbies are running high in Barmah, but locals say they haven’t seen any horses since flood waters receded

Beneath the towering river red gums in the Barmah-Millewa forest, we scan the bush for a glimpse of the brumbies.

Locals say no one has seen the herds of feral horses that roam the national parks on either side of the Murray River since last year’s devastating floods, and our luck is no different.

It’s Sunday, the day before the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service closed parts of the Murray Valley national park for five days for an aerial feral pest control operation – an operation a parks spokesperson says targeted every large feral pest species in the park except the horses.
