Female jockey dies in fall at Cranbourne

A female apprentice jockey has died after an accident at Cranbourne Racecourse on Friday morning.

The jockey fell during morning trackwork.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

In a statement, Victoria Police said the 22-year-old jockey, from Clyde, fell from a horse at about 4.35am.

Police said her death was not being treated as suspicious and that WorkSafe were also investigating at the track on Grant Street in Cranbourne, which is about 50 kilometres to the south-east of Melbourne.

Track work was abandoned for the day at the training centre after the fall.

Racing Victoria released a statement on Friday morning.

"It is with great sadness that Racing Victoria confirms that a female jockey has tragically passed away following an incident at the Cranbourne Training Centre this morning," the statement said.

"Victoria Police and WorkSafe are on-site investigating the circumstances of the incident in which no other riders were injured.

"Trackwork at the Cranbourne Training Centre was closed following the incident.

"RV, the Victorian Jockeys Association and the Cranbourne Turf Club are offering assistance to the family and local racing community at this tragic time."
