Four horses have been killed while five people are in hospital after a four-wheel drive towing a horse trailer smashed into a tree.

The group, aged from 14 to 20, had been travelling in a white Ford Ranger when it suddenly collided with the stump at about 1.45am on Monday, in Sidmouth, in northern Tasmania.

An 18-year-old suffered serious injuries and has been airlifted to Melbourne, while a 17-year-old will need to undergo surgery.
