History-making jockey Michelle Payne makes retirement announcement

The first and only woman to ever win a Melbourne Cup, Michelle Payne, has revealed she will retire following one last horse racing season.

The 37-year-old member of the Sport Australian Hall of Fame has ridden more than 750 winners, including five Group 1s.

Payne admits she has been slowly “weaning” off riding for some time, but “still (had) a bit to do before the end”.

“It’s a big juggling act and I love it ... I’m still young and energetic enough for it, but I’m planning for the future,” she told Racenet.com.au.
