Waller: Special moment I met Winx foal

Over Winx’s long reign as Australasia’s champion racehorse, she re-wrote so many records and produced so many highlights, it would seem incredible that one of her trainer Chris Waller’s most cherished times with the mare would come three and a half years after her final race.

Last Saturday morning, Winx gave birth to her first live foal two years after a troubled and ultimately failed pregnancy with an I Am Invincible foal two years earlier. Within hours, a beaming Waller and his family were on hand at the Hunter Valley property to welcome the healthy Pierro filly.

The timing didn’t come about by fluke, as Waller explained this week, it was a journey he had planned for some time. He still needed luck, however, as the storms that ultimately brought about the premature end to the Randwick meeting later that afternoon, were brewing.

“I took the family up and it will be something we will remember for the rest of our lives,” Waller said.
