Agricultural show goes virtual with ABC Wide Bay in a radio first for locked-down communities

You can't put the gloves on in the boxing tent, there is no smell of cattle manure and the giant ferris wheel is not spinning — but in what has been dubbed a radio first, an ABC radio station in Queensland has hosted a virtual agricultural show.

To the real sounds of bells and drums, boxing tent promoter Fred Brophy rallied ABC Wide Bay listeners to tune in to the event for communities whose local shows were cancelled due to COVID-19.

Over four hours, listeners in towns like Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Gympie and the North and South Burnett enjoyed the sounds of sideshow alley, got tips on how to bake blue ribbon cakes and even a virtual showing of local cattle.
