Christine Bates claims two classes at Canberra Horse Trials

A stunning performance by Christine Bates saw the equestrian take two wins from as many starts at the Canberra Horse Trials this weekend, claiming the main 2* class event with Chatzi.

The winning combination jumped clear of both cross country and show-jumping, before finishing on a dressage score of 29.20.

Zoe Hutchinson finished second, riding beautifully on the seasoned Annapurna, leading after the dressage on a 25.3 test, went clear in the cross country - but took two show jumping rails on the Linda Thane track.

Olympian Rebel Morrow, in combination with off-track thoroughbred Togo, round out the podium.

A record number of entrants at the Curtin event saw three sections for each of the heights in the 95, 80 and 60 centimetre EVA classes.

Bates, who has been short-listed for three Olympics, had another win in the Imperial floats EVA 95 B with former racehorse Sparky Lad - finishing on her dressage score of 22.6.

The Rosemont EVA A 95-centimetres was won by Justine Blunden riding BJ Cyber, while Lucy O'Sullivan claimed the junior EVA 95.

In other results, the Neigh Hay 1* was won by Kimberly King riding Irish Craft, moving up from seventh place in the dressage to secure victory.

The TeQ teams competition was also trialed at the event, with Kristie and Jodie Brooks, Elysia Horan and Penny Hutchinson being the overall winners.
