Collie records highest number of animal cruelty cases in WA in past 12 months

Financial hardship caused by the COVID pandemic has been blamed after a rural town in the south-west of Western Australia recorded the highest number of animal cruelty cases in the state over the past 12 months.

The rural town of Collie, two hours south of Perth and inland from Bunbury, accounted for more than 33 per cent of regional RSPCA prosecutions during the period.

Two of the five animals involved in some of the town's worst cases died after suffering neglect.

They comprised a dog called Charlie was found buried in a backyard, malnourished and severely emaciated and a horse that had to be put down after it was starved and dehydrated.
