Feral horses encroach on Utopia homelands, creating safety and infrastructure issues

A mob of around 500 feral horses is increasingly encroaching on a remote Northern Territory Indigenous community, creating a safety issue for residents and damaging water infrastructure.

The Utopia Homelands is a collection of small outstations around 240 kilometres north-east of Alice Springs.

Dennis Kunoth, who runs Waite River cattle lease just south of Utopia, said feral horses were walking right up to community houses in search of water.

"I've seen [stallions] fighting at taps on the end of verandas — fighting over a drink," he said.
