Harness racing tragedy: Twelve horses perish in Victorian stable fire

A dozen horses perished in a horrific stable fire overnight in Central Victoria as residents of the rural property fought to save the animals.

Police have been told the occupant of a property on Lancefield-Kilmore Rd woke about 12.30am to what sounded like “popping noises”.

They went outside to investigate, finding the horse stables adjacent to the family home “engulfed in flames”.

The alarm was raised, with firefighters quickly responding to the blaze as residents made a desperate attempt to save the horses.

A Country Fire Association spokeswoman said 10 tankers were called to the scene, finding the large structure “fully involved”.
