Kurri Kurri pit horse statue to be unveiled on Saturday, December 11

A massive community-led project will come to fruition this Saturday when Kurri Kurri's pit horse sculpture is officially unveiled.

After many delays due to drought, bushfires and COVID-19, the sculpture was recently installed in Col Brown Rotary Park by sculptor Brett 'Mon' Garling.

"The whole project has been a beautiful journey," organising committee spokesperson Colin Andrews said.

"We have learned so much along the way.

"We still can't believe the public support which was given to our fundraising concerts, Bunnings barbecues and other fundraisers.

"The project is a tribute to every horse which worked on the Greta Seam over more than a hundred years."

The pit horse project has been achieved in collaboration with Towns With Heart, which was the auspicing body to assist with funding applications and other administrative detail.

"We've been delighted to work with the Pit Horse Committee," Towns With Heart chairman Toby Thomas said.

"They are a committed group of local people who were determined to see this project through to completion."

The official unveiling will be held at 10am Saturday.

A free country music concert will follow from 11.30am to 4pm, featuring members of the Bellbird Music Club including Greg Bain, Ken Smith, Boris Bajric, Rick Ferret and Brian Stitt. Proceedings will be under the guidance of well-known local compere John Bain.

The local community is warmly invited to join the organisers for this significant occasion.
