Move Dismissed to Keep Horses in Modern Pentathlon at 2028 Los Angeles Olympics

A move by Denmark’s Modern Pentathlon Association to keep horses in the sport at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics has been dismissed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The decision by CAS on the Danish association’s appeal against the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne, governing body of the sport, to replace equestrian in a new format came after a controversial incident at the Tokyo Games last year.

A change in the format of the pentathlon that has been in the Olympics fore more than a century came after charges of horse abuse when a German coach was shown apparently punching a horse that refused to jump a fence. Equestrian was one element along with fencing, swimming, pistol shooting and cross-country running in pentathlon competition.
