Outcry after emaciated horses put up for sale at council auction

Supporters of an animal rescue centre on the Sunshine Coast are demanding to know why two emaciated horses were sent to auction rather than transported to carers.

The six-year-old stallion and 13-year-old pregnant mare were handed over to the Soquilichi Rescue Ranch last week by a buyer who bought them at a public online auction.

The pair was among seven horses impounded by Gympie Regional Council, which was unable to locate the animals' owners.

The horses' condition prompted an outcry from supporters of the rescue centre, who say they should have been given immediate care rather than being put up for sale.
