Prison likely for shooter who killed 41 horses at Longreach, says appalled lawyer

The person who slaughtered more than 40 horses in outback Queensland in scenes that left seasoned police officers horrified is likely to face several years behind bars, lawyers say.

Police are continuing to appeal for information from the public after dozens of horses were found shot dead on Yanburra Station, north of Longreach, last week.

The death toll has increased to 41, including pregnant mares and foals, as investigators examine the results of forensic necropsies.

Detective Sergeant Allan Cook said aerial surveillance was carried out over the 2,000-hectare property over the weekend.
