Racing Victoria rejects trainers' calls on cobalt

Racing Victoria stewards have rebuffed calls from the Australian Trainers' Association to defer any current cobalt charges while an investigation into the performance-enhancing qualities of cobalt are ongoing.

In a letter sent to the ATA on Monday from Jamie Stier, Racing Victoria's executive general manager of integrity, RV stewards said they would continue on with the hearing of any cobalt cases awaiting determination and will "continue to investigate and prosecute" breaches of cobalt administration.

Former jumps jockey-turned-trainer Steve Pateman and partner Jessica Barton, charged with presenting one of their horses to the races with an elevated cobalt reading, are next in line to have their case heard by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board in October, while father-daughter Stawell trainers Terry and Karina O'Sullivan are challenging their one-year bans at VCAT in November.
