Rangers cull 55 horses after dozens found dead by Central Australian waterhole

Landowners are considering how to dispose of almost 100 horse carcasses decomposing in a Central Australian waterhole, after rangers shot 55 struggling animals a day after dozens were found dead.

Photographs emerged yesterday of dozens of dead brumbies strewn along a 100-metre stretch of a swimming hole, called Deep Hole, about 20 kilometres from the remote Santa Teresa community.

The ABC understands rangers found about 40 dead horses last Thursday, with another 55 still alive but struggling.

The Central Land Council (CLC) then arranged an emergency cull of the 55 horses on Friday.
