Sandy the WWI warhorse immortalised with bronze statue in hometown Tallangatta

The rolling hills of north-east Victoria came alive on the weekend to the stirring sight of 200 horses and riders in Tallangatta.

Two dozen of them wore Australian Light Horse uniforms, others the colours of their riding club. Some carried pennants and the Australian flag.

They lined up along the main street in solemn tribute for the unveiling of a life-sized bronze statue of a horse named Sandy — the only Australian horse to come home from World War One.

Sandy, from Tallangatta, was among 130,000 to 160,000 Australian horses sent to the war from farms and stations across the nation.
