Tokyo in the Rearview: The Horses, Riders, and Moments that Moved Us Most

“The important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win, but to take part; the important thing in life is not triumph, but the struggle; the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.”

Those were the immortal words of Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympics — and though we’re delighted to have left many of Coubertin’s dodgy ideals in the dust (he famously dismissed the idea of female athletes, calling them ‘impractical, uninteresting, unaesthetic’) — we do quite like where this little quip is going. Though we’ve been moved to tears and thoroughly inspired by our medal winners at Tokyo, there have been so many characters and so many stories, that have made just as significant of an impact through the week.
