Death-defying horse returns to the races

Like all who survived the Buchan bushfires, gelding Firefree is resilient, but that strength was put to the test once again when the eight year-old found himself close to death for the second time just months after the fires scorched his hometown.

Affectionately known as Jeffrey, Firefree, was ironically named because he lived in an area where there hadn’t been any fires, but that all changed on December 30, 2019.

As a much-loved member of his owners Peter and Robyn Sandy’s family, Firefree was evacuated to the town’s football oval on the night of the fires, escaping the devastating fate of many other animals in the region as the bushfires decimated Victoria’s east.
