O'Hara to miss spring carnival for using phone in jockeys' room

Kathy O’Hara's Melbourne Cup dreams have been crushed after she was suspended for three months for using her mobile phone in the jockeys' room on 65 occasions between August 2018 and August 2019.

O'Hara's Tuesday started well with an impressive trial from Melbourne Cup-bound Grey Lion at Randwick, but by the end of the day she was faced with the reality of missing the entire spring carnival.

The inquiry was opened when O’Hara’s phone was found in the jockeys' room at Kembla Grange on August 8 with Racing NSW stewards forensically imaging its use over the past 12 months. They found “nothing outside racedays that would arise to any concern” on the phone but found she had continually used it from the track.

Jockeys are not allowed to use their phones during meetings where they are riding.
