Yunta Picnic Races and Gymkhana

The members of the Yunta Racing Club thank you for your past support and hope that you might again assist us in promoting this important event in the North East pastoral district.

There’s anticipation around the stables as horses are prepped and trained for Yunta’s annual Picnic Races & Gymkhana – which is just one month away! Sprinters and gymkhana horses are in earnest training, with hopes that they’ll take home a share of the $12,000 prizemoney on 28th April.

Yunta Racing Club members are now preparing the course and facilities, adjacent to the Barrier Highway, in readiness for the usual crowd of cheery spectators and keen competitors. In response to requests, the Club has added an additional two Led events for riders aged under 8 years (total of 4). Another popular move had been the scrapping of gymkhana nomination fees, (- excepting for the prestigious Barrel Racing).

Twenty eight gymkhana and racing events make for a full day of horse action – with the feature event being the 1400m YUNTA CUP with the first past the post receiving an impressive Cup and $3000. Overall, through the generosity of sponsors, the Club will offer in excess of $12,000 in prizemoney, trophies and ribbons.

Trackside, spectators can scrutinize the variety of stalls, test their skills on the novelty events and enjoy the all-day dining – and the conviviality at the bar. A bouncy castle, fairy floss, lucky dips and childcare will keep the youngsters amused all day.

A lip-smacking roast tea will be served alongside the blazing bon-fire before the talented country music singer John O’Dea entertains the cheery crowd of ‘stayers’. Free camping and stellar facilities are appreciated by race-goers and as per usual, the No Dogs and No BYO rules apply. The Club sincerely appreciates the attendance of SAAS volunteers and SAPOL officers to keep everybody safe and happy.

As a result of Yunta’s fabulous annual race-day, the YRC continues to support various charities and local community projects.
